About Chinese Association of West Michigan

The Chinese Association of West Michigan (CAWM) is a non-profit cultural organization dedicated to advancing cross-cultural understanding and promoting Chinese heritage throughout the Greater Grand Rapids area and surrounding West Michigan communities including Holland, Muskegon, and Grand Haven. Since its establishment in 1979, CAWM has grown to serve hundreds of member families while maintaining an inclusive, welcoming environment for individuals of all ethnic backgrounds and religious beliefs. The organization recognizes the significant growth of the Chinese population in West Michigan, which now represents one of the fastest-growing ethnic groups in the region, with a substantial professional community including approximately 100 Chinese PhD professionals, 40 university professors, and over 30 medical researchers at the VanAndel Research Institute alone. CAWM provides comprehensive cultural and educational programming tailored to meet community needs. The Grand Rapids Chinese Language School, a subsidiary of CAWM, operates every Saturday throughout the academic year, offering over 10 classes with nearly 100 students ranging from four-year-olds to working adults. The school serves dual purposes: enabling Chinese descendants to maintain their native language and cultural heritage while providing business professionals and interested community members opportunities to learn Chinese and develop cultural competency. CAWM annually hosts three major celebration events—Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival—featuring authentic cuisine, cultural performances, and community activities. The organization actively contributes to the broader West Michigan community through partnerships with local governments, educational institutions, and civic organizations, including a 37-year commitment to the state highway adoption program, demonstrating CAWM's dedication to environmental stewardship and community improvement.
