About UT Austin Asian American Journalists Association

The UT Austin Asian American Journalists Association is a dedicated student organization serving the Austin, TX community through professional development and media advocacy. Founded in Fall 2017 by three passionate journalism students, the organization has grown to become a vital hub for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) journalists and aspiring media professionals at the University of Texas at Austin.

The organization operates around four core missions that guide its programming and community engagement. First, it provides meaningful association and support among AAPI journalists while advancing members toward leadership roles as news managers and media executives. Second, it offers comprehensive encouragement, information, advice, and scholarship assistance to AAPI students pursuing professional journalism careers. Third, it works to increase AAPI community awareness of news media and helps community members understand how to gain fair access to media coverage and representation.

Additionally, the organization actively monitors news media coverage to identify instances where outlets stray from accuracy and fairness in their reporting on Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and AAPI-related issues. This advocacy work ensures responsible journalism and holds media accountable for equitable representation.

Beyond its mission-driven work, the UT Austin chapter creates an engaging environment through various events, workshops, and social gatherings that blend professional development with casual networking and fun. Members have access to resources including writing tips, the Asian Experience Magazine, and regular events designed to foster relationships within the journalism community. The organization maintains an active presence on social media and regularly updates its events calendar to keep members informed of upcoming activities and opportunities.
